Description

Emma Watson (Best known as Hermione from Harry Potter) Found a new trick in making a much stronger contrast, I suppose it doesn’t mean anything over the internet as that can all be fixed with photoshop, but in person the blacks are a black as it is with oil paint, and just as deep. You'll have to forgive the way the picture's contrast showed up, after a dozen tries this was the best. Problem was reflections as well as massive highlights. If I try to adjust afterwards it looses the depth of the blackness. However it should be noted that there is stark white in the drawing, it just shows up a 20-30 percent grey on here :(

Emma Watson is simply beautiful. She actually takes up a third of a my gallery now. But why I find her such an interesting subject is something not everyone will see. There is a tremendous amount of power in her expressions, however it is very subtle, and very real. Often you cannot see what she is “saying” unless you take the time to listen,. Quick viewers of her work miss a great deal.

This one and another I will post later both express the same thing. Ironically this one took me a while to see, it struck me instantly with its power but I didn’t understand it at first. Perhaps it was because of the framing of the original photo; she was sitting on a scooter outside, it was for a fashion magazine even, in all honesty there didn’t seem to be anything special about it. Still something about her look really caught my attention. Thankfully the picture was in the 3000+ pixel range and I was able to really look close. My initial reaction was her being scared, which is a part of the emotion.

The emotion is heart break.

It is a look that speaks greatly to me personally. In that one she looks if she is looking onto whom is breaking her heart. The fear, the pain and the lonesomeness are all under a calm surface, but her lip slightly quivers to find a voice that has gone and her eyes scream what her heart cannot.

I am not a man who looks at a broken heart like this sadly, in fact in some odd way I find comfort in it. I’m a man who can smile with a mouth full of blood, and have proven that. These reflections remind me of where I have been, where I am, and where I am going. To remember what I have been through helps me to embrace all that is to come in its fullness. To forget our scars is to forgo all that was learned, the blackest blacks will help you to truly see how white the purest whites really are. Without the contrast, how could you ever truly know?

And yes, a lot of what I have written here is personal, but that is art for you: personal.

The right piece of art with the right piece of music can make the two exponentially stronger than what they are on their own.

Personally I have found the song “So I thought”- by Flyleaf to be an extremely powerful combination.

Just hit the big red play button:

So with that being said, hope you enjoy them, and all art. And go and make art :)

Terrific expression and eyes :) and I like the contrast this way!
You won't find many artist who write such descriptions, and I like it that you did. It really adds to the picture for me :)

Very nice work. The contrast is great the way it turned out. I love that you have a background, some portraits (like my own, usually have no background, or they are just black), but you put in a background (that was probably part of the picture) but still you chose to put it in there and it looks great. I love the expression.

Lovely work Stephen!!.
